Audi S8

Sedan Audi S8 of the third generation was introduced in 2011 in Frankfurt. It is distinguished from the A8 (generation release since 2009) by sporty design of the exterior and interior, as well as many high-tech solutions in the accompanying base equipment. For example, this is sports air suspension, better brakes, a powerful four-liter bi-turbo engine and standard Quattro all-wheel drive, which makes the driving not just safer in difficult weather conditions, but also allows to implement all driving requests. Audi S8 Review will tell about these features in more details.

Interior

Like the A8, S8 sports sedan offers a luxurious interior and a corresponding class of materials quality. It differs with high acoustic comfort, which is provided by the presence of, for example, double-panel side windows or the active noise reduction system. The comfort is provided by front sports seats with electric heating, ventilation and massage function. In addition, the standard equipment includes 20-inch aluminum wheels, exterior mirrors with a full set of functions (heating, auto blackout, powered adjustment and folding, the memory of positions), as well as LED running lights and rear lights, climate control for driver and front passenger, rear and side curtains, Multifunction steering wheel with function of gear shift. The interior is decorated with combined inlays “carbon” and “aluminum”.

Powertrain

The model is equipped with a 4-liter V8 TFSI with two turbochargers. This engine allows the car weighing more than 2 tons to accelerate in just 4.2 seconds, thanks to the capacity of 520 hp and torque of 650 Nm, available in a range of 1700 to 5500 rpm, which is transmitted to the wheels through eight-automatic transmission. There is a cylinder deactivation system, so that at partial load the engine can operate as a more economical V4. The same powerplant is used on the Bentley Continental GT. The S8 plus model has the engine which develops 605 hp and up to 750 Nm in overboost mode. An increase of 85 hp was achieved thanks to an improved exhaust system and geometry of a supercharger.

One of the features of the chassis in Audi S8 is the presence of standard specially tuned adaptive air suspension with variable damping, which can change the clearance and adjust it to various driving modes. In addition, the equipment includes sports rear cross-axle differential, dynamic steering system, which varies the gear ratio according to vehicle speed. Permanent all-wheel drive Quattro has the feature here - the asymmetrical dynamic torque distribution with emphasis on the rear wheels. The brake system includes ventilated disc brakes on all wheels (diameter 400mm at front, 365mm rear) and the electromechanical parking brake. Engine and chassis settings are integrated by system Audi drive select, which allows you to change them, choosing from five modes: comfort, auto, dynamic, individual and efficiency.

Safety

Safety equipment of standard S8 includes: airbags (front, side, curtain), seat belts with pretensioners and force limiters, child’s lockup, parking aid with sensors front and rear, Auto Hold function (assistant preventing inadvertent movement), cabin rearview mirror with auto-dimming and light and rain sensors. ESP stabilization program includes a sport mode in which the engine output is determined solely by the position of the pedal. Numerous additional “assistants” can help making the drive even safer.

Audi S8 is one of the most high-tech premium cars. Fully equipped, it has a safe and rigid body with a high content of aluminum components. Over the years of the production the car has evolved constantly, new equipment was added, and the list of standard systems expanded. Thus, the new version S8 plus became the most powerful in the lineup. With regard to the place in the market, the S8 is significantly inferior to the usual A8 in popularity because of its high cost, but in the second-hand class the car can offer attractive prices.
