The Chery QQ is a 5-door city car constructed and marketed by Chery Automobile, the Chinese automobile manufacturing company, since 2003. The car was renamed in 2006 to the QQ3 as the new Chery QQ6 was launched. Consequently, misunderstandings may emerge as sometimes you cannot know what’s exactly meant under the ‘Chery QQ’ brand without specification: the QQ3 line-up alone or all the existing QQ cars.
Its affordable price, attractive appearance, and manoeuvrability are the keystone of its success. The Chery QQ is considered to be a legendary car for the Chinese automaker. Due to its low price, it was the best-sold Chery model during the 2000s.
The Chery QQ is produced in a 5-door hatchback body style being 3,550 mm long, 1,495 mm wide, and 1,485 mm high with the 2,340 mm wheelbase. The car’s curb weight is 880 kg while its gross weight is 1,255 kg; carrying capacity is 385 kg. Thanks to the 125 mm ground clearance and 13 in tyres, the car’s presence on the road is felt, meaning its chances to roll over are negligibly small.
The Chery QQ looks nice from the outside. A colour scheme for the car includes silver and white apart from bright yellow, green, red, and blue. At the front end of the city car, there are double-dipping headlamps and fog lamps as well as oval-shaped turn signals. The hatchback is of a streamlined form that creates an effect of a capsule. The door mirrors are adjustable and foldable. There are mouldings on the car’s front and rear doors. The most bulging part of the QQ’s body is the rear bumper.
As the exterior, the Chery QQ’s interior is full of smooth lines and rounded shapes. The cabin is trimmed with light grey hues mostly while the panels are painted in a traditional black colour. There are silver-coloured plastic inserts on the doors. The seats wrapped in velour offer comfortable headrests. Although there’s nothing special about the instrument panel in the car, it’s well arranged and intuitive that some cars cannot boast of.
Despite its modest dimensions, the Chery QQ is surprisingly spacious inside. There’s lots of head- and legroom at the front. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about its rear seats. The manufacturer claims the Chery QQ is 5-seater, but a 4-member crew will be happier there, especially on long-distance journeys.
The tiny dimensions of the Chery QQ are the car’s advantage if to consider it through a certain prism. Firstly, they make it perfect for driving in a city’s heavy traffic; its manoeuvrability paves the way through the city jungles. Secondly, a heater and air conditioner operate well in a relatively small cabin: the cabin cools down quickly in summer and warms up no less quickly in winter.
Moreover, all the controls are placed exactly where you expect them to be in the Chery QQ. It’s important to keep a driver concentrated on the road; their eyes don’t wander over the dashboard/console on the go searching for a needed button.
Both forward and rearward visibility deserves praise. The Chery QQ offers 170-litre cargo capacity.
The Chery QQ can be powered by 2 engines both of which are paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox and drive the front wheels. A 0.8-litre engine makes 51 hp and 52 lb/ft of torque while a 1.1-litre one generates 67 hp and 66 lb/ft of torque. Having 35 litres of fuel tank capacity, the Chery QQ consumes 6.8 litres per 100 kilometres. It means that it can run about 500 km before the next fuelling is needed.
Safety and Other Features
Unfortunately, the Chery QQ isn’t as safe as it must be. There are much safer models in the segment. Knowing its price is enough to understand why it’s so.
All the Chery QQ models are equipped with air bags, seatbelts, and child-safety door locks. Besides, there are central locking and anti-lock braking system in the car.
The Chery QQ in the TE, base trim offers steel wheel rims and 2-speaker sound system among other things while the TX, more advanced level, provides electric mirrors and windows, alloys, and a 4-speaker AM/FM audio system. An air conditioner comes standard on the TX models being optional on the TE.
