Chery Tiggo

The Chery Tiggo is a compact crossover by the Chinese automobile manufacturing company Chery Automobile that entered mass production in 2006 and has been made and marketed up to the present.

Brief History

In fact, the Chery Tiggo is the first compact crossover by the automaker. Having been inexperienced in constructing such vehicles, the manufacturer used the already known Toyota RAV4 as a basis.

They strived to make own creation as remote from the Japanese original as possible. Apart from having developed the brand-new exterior, the automaker remade the chassis and powertrain. They enlisted services of experts from Mitsubishi and Lotus for this.

The Chery Tiggo made its official debut at the 2005 Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition. In 2010, a completely restyled Tiggo was introduced. This model was even more different from the RAV4. It featured noticeable design changes both outside (a new grille, boot, headlamps, and bumpers) and inside (a new steering wheel; redesigned dashboard and central console) as well as updated technological equipment.

A new generation of the Chery Tiggo was launched in 2013 when the Chery Tiggo 5 was unveiled at Guangzhou International Automobile Exhibition. The front-wheel-drive crossover’s rivals are the Hyundai ix35, Nissan Terrano, and SsangYong Actyon.

Exterior & Interior

The Chery Tiggo 5 is 4,506 mm long, 1,841 mm wide, and 1,740 mm high with the 2,610 mm wheelbase. The crossover is substantially redesigned. A single glance at it is enough to notice it. In particular, the beltline isn’t straight anymore but ascending and the wheel arches are wider.

The Chery Tiggo’s interior is also modified. The main dials – speedometer and tachometer – are placed deep into the instrument panel, steering wheel is multifunctional, and the central console houses a large display.

The crossover’s cabin is trimmed with materials of high quality (not so many Chinese autos can boast of the same). Besides, it’s comfortable and looks modern although it cannot be called splendid.

The Chery Tiggo 5 hasn’t just increased its dimensions but also added space inside. The seats front and back are comfortable but it’d be better if they were more bolstered up. Passengers at the back can fold their seats flat (that’s of great value on long-distance journeys).

With all the seats in place, the vehicle’s cargo capacity is 370 litres. When they are folded down, it boosts up to 972 litres. There’s a full-size spare wheel under the boot’s floor.

A noteworthy detail is that all the controls and dials are well organized. So, it doesn’t take long to get used to them. On the central console, there’s a 7-inch LCD display.

However, it’s not all that good with sound-insulation in the Chery Tiggo 5. Its engine roars really loudly at high speeds. If it rains in addition, you’ll have to raise your voice to tell something to your fellow travellers.

Moreover, the vehicle is now less comfortable on the ride due to a stiffer suspension it exploits. It lets the passengers know about all the humps and dents on the way. Good news is that the new Chery Tiggo, represented by the Tiggo 5, is much more stable at high velocity than its predecessors.

Powertrain & Fuel Economy

The Chery Tiggo 5 is an exclusively front-wheel-drive vehicle. But the Chinese automaker does their best to make the crossover fully correspond with its destination: to travel both on and off the road. The vehicle is expected to be produced in an AWD version, too.

The Chery Tiggo 5 is powered by the only 2.0-litre petrol engine that comes with 2 transmissions.

The 2.0 MT is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. Being able to accelerate the car up to 175 km/h, 0-100 km/h happens in 12.8 seconds. The engine is estimated at returning 10.8 l/100 km in the city and 6.6 l/100 km on the highway (8.2 l/100 km combined).

The 2.0 16-valve I4 CVT motor generates 136 hp and 182 Nm and is teamed up with a continuously variable transmission. It reaches 100 km/h in 15 seconds offering 165 km/h top speed. The 2.0 CVT covers 13.1 l/100 km in the city and 7.8 l/100 km on the highway (9.8 l/100 km combined).

The Chery Tiggo 5 offers 2 front airbags, central locking, and ISOFIX child-seat mounting points as well as ABS, EBD, and stability control. Besides, the vehicle is equipped with power mirrors, on-board computer, and climate control. USB ports and air conditioning are also included to the kit.
