Ferrari Testarossa

Some vehicles of the past keep on dictating terms of development for the entire segment. For example, Ferrari is considered to be a trend-setter in the sports car industry, whatever model is on the anvil. Unbeaten performance and mind-boggling design are the features which serve a poster child for the rivals. In order not to make unsubstantiated statements, we advise casting a glance at Ferrari Testarossa review.

Chassis

Ferrari Testarossa is a 2-door, 2-seater coupe that has been in production from 1984 to 1995. It featured 4485x1975x1130 mm dimensions and 2550 mm wheelbase. As distinct from the Berlinetta Boxer, the predecessor, an extended chassis promoted for more space for the luggage as under-the-hood (forward-opening), so behind the seats.

The chassis was designed on Pininfarina platform that was differentiated by the rear mid-engine layout and the allocation of two radiators on the each side of the engine for an efficient cooling. Such localization provided for a perfect middle-oriented center gravity with weight distribution index of 60% (rear) to 40% (front). Thus, stability and cornering ability were strong points of the model.

The integration of side radiators resulted in the appearance of conspicuous air inlets. Besides, the tail has been widened to add the bodywork more aggressive look. The cabin and doors are made of a galvanized steels, whereas all other details – of aluminum. Front and rear bumpers are the only components to be made of plastic.

The Testarossa employs an independent suspension with anti-roll bar, unequally long wishbones, twin shock absorbers, and coil springs. Instead of standard 16-inch wheels, Ferrari fitted 10-inch rear and 8-inch front wheels. The braking system consists of disk ventilated brakes. Inside, the cabin boasted luxury finish with leather upholstery, leather-covered steering wheel, and updated fascia.

Powertrain Performance

Ferrari Testarossa is driven by rear wheels and a 5-speed manual transmission. It is powered by a 12-cylinder 4.9-liter Ferrari Boxer 12 flat engine that is able to generate 390 horsepower and 490 nm of torque. Each cylinder comes with four valves, totaling in 48 valves overall. The coupe can accelerate to 100 km/h for 5.3 seconds at the maximal power of 291 kW. Its top speed is rated at 290 km/h. In addition, the model features Marelli electronic ignition & Bosch K-Jetronic injection system.

Modifications

It’s impossible to review Ferrari Testarossa without mentioning about its modifications. Indeed, in 1991 the vehicle was revised to 512 TR version, and three years later – to 512 M version. Moreover, the manufacturer introduced a limited edition Testarossa Spider. The latter had analogous specifications, except for the body type – convertible. This modification teased silver paintwork, white leather interior, a white power rooftop, and a blue-striped sill platform.

To continue, the 512 TR employed the same powertrain but could perform a bit better than the base model. It accelerated from 0 to 97 km/h for 4.9 seconds, while the maximum speed equaled to 314 km/h. As contrasted with the 1984 version, the revised version received an improved braking system with larger front rotors, a new single-plate clutch, and a rethought angle for the shifter. Additionally, designers have relocated the engine with radiators to provide for a better center of gravity along with an ideal handling.

Furthermore, the 512 M has finalized the era of Testarossa. There were only 500 cars produced to satisfy the needs of the segment. The 4.9-liter engine boasted titanium connecting rods and an updated crankshaft. The model accelerated to 100 km/h for 4.7 seconds and could reach the maximum of 315 km/h.

The bodywork was distinguished by redesigned front and rear lamps. Now, the front lamps were square-framed and no longer hidden, whereas the taillights were round-framed. Inside, the model resembled the 512 TR. Still, it received a chrome-plated gearshift knob, aluminum pedals, standard air conditioner, and carbon fiber seats upholstery.
