In recent years, the Hyundai corporate group made a breakthrough. It is already included in the list of the world leaders in the automotive industry and gradually masters new classes of models. In 2008 the Korean brand has shown the world business-class sedan Genesis. But it was a short-lived flagship: soon they introduced more expensive novelty - Equus. In Hyundai Equus Review we are going to talk about the second generation of the sedan, but its predecessor was little known outside of South Korea.
The appearance of a newcomer is a further development of the Genesis style, which separates the two models from the rest of Hyundai. Equus attracts attention with its massive and monumental design. Slanting headlights (Xenon and LED lamps) are stretched to the wings. The hull back is highlighted by the teardrop-shaped lights with LED stop lamps. Equus uses a modified Hyundai Genesis platform. Major changes were limited to its elongation. With a length of 5160 mm it is 155 mm longer than its “donor”, and its wheelbase grew by 110 mm (3045 mm). The width remains unchanged (1891 mm) and height is increased by 10 mm - up to 1491 mm.
Interior of the car is quite difficult to imagine without the high-quality finishing materials. Already in the basic version, it is decorated with natural wood and leather, and the buyer has the opportunity to choose from - birch, walnut or eucalyptus. A roof rack is covered with Alcantara. Electroluminescent dials are only visible when the ignition is switched on. The central panel is framed by silver plates and vents in the form of petals. The analog clock is decorated in a classic style. On the top there is a 3.5-inch monitor of the navigation system, under it - the blocks of climate control and audio systems.
The front seats are very wide and soft, with mandatory heating, ventilation and massage function. Between the seats on the center console there is the joystick to control the multimedia system and a sliding armrest with cooling boxes inside. The configuration of the second row can include as option: a three-seater bench or two separate chairs. The space over the head and legroom is huge. Established Lexicon audio system includes a CD-changer, USB-port and 17 speakers output of 608 watts. There are only 9 airbags: front, side, front and rear inflatable “curtains” and airbag in the steering column. But the richer version Ultimate has powered trunk lid, rear seat ventilation, front viewing camera and a DVD-player with 8-inch screen for the second row passengers.
4.6-liter V8 rated engine at 385 hp works together with a 6-speed automatic transmission. It has very good traction, since the maximum torque is 439 Nm. The “Eight” is very quiet and smooth, and the soundproofing is great. Only at high speeds you can hear the low frequency roar. Equus accelerates in a calm and confident manner. Quite heavy sedan reaches the 100 km / h in 6.4 sec. and the maximum speed is limited to 240 km / h. The city consumption is 16.3 liters / 100 km, and in the country - 8.0 l / 100 km. In the Korean market, the sedan is offered with a 3.8-liter 286-hp V6, and 5.0-liter 429-horsepower V8 and 8-speed “automatic” with significantly reduced fuel consumption.
Equus can’t be called a sports sedan, in contrast, it is a comfortable road vehicle. Best of all it manages the measured driving on smooth and straight road. For active drivers there is a sport mode, but it is virtually identical to the basic settings. Steering wheel is very light, and rather big sedan easily copes with complex maneuvers on busy city streets.
