Until the 80s of the last century Isuzu neglected the production of SUVs. But then the company took the risk and has launched the SUV, which became one of the most successful in the world. Isuzu Trooper, and its successor, Isuzu Rodeo, was not only sold all over the world, but also served as a basis for other vehicles. Now Isuzu pays more attention to the production of pickup trucks, one of which will be described in Isuzu D-Max Review.
Meet Japanese Thai origin pickup Isuzu D-Max. It is a typical pick-up in the modern sense. The rear doors, with the width of hardly larger than a half of the front doors, are made more for image than for necessity. The appearance of the car definitely shows its Asian origin. First and foremost this is a merit of headlights of odd shape: they seem to be quadrangular, but the corners have some curves.
The cabin, as opposed to overdressed appearance, is austere, but qualitative. The plastic is not rigid and it does not creak when driving. The equipment is quite modern and it includes: power windows, air conditioning and front airbags. Another striking element of the interior is certainly the optical dashboard.
The front seats are comfortable moderately. The rear bench is wide, and it can fit three passengers even in winter clothes. The flatbed is big indeed, which allows loading a lot of stuff.
The engine with a volume of 2.5 l is equipped with common rail injection and two turbochargers. This provides a maximum power of 120 kW at 3600 rpm and 400 Nm of torque in the range from 1400 to 2000 min-1. The engine is combined with a 6-speed manual transmission or 5-speed automatic transmission with a hydrodynamic converter. Fuel consumption is 10.2 liters per 100 kilometers; with the automatic transmission, checks of cars dynamics and travel on the highway this is not a bad figure. At a constant speed of 130 km / h the revs get to 2300 per minute and fuel consumption - 9.5 liters per 100 kilometers.
In normal mode, Isuzu D-Max has only the rear wheel. All-wheel drive is connected by a simple push of a button. The front drive can be turned on the move at speeds up to 100 km / h. The small icon on the instrument panel informs that the front wheels come into operation. At full drive D-Max storms the snow ups easily. High-torque diesel engine, good tires, four-wheel drive makes it possible to quickly and easily climb to an altitude.
It is believed that modern cars very often consist of mere compromise to please everyone. Exceptions are sport utility vehicles, vans and pickups, this means vehicles that are created with a specific purpose; but D-Max can please everyone.
It is not much noisy, but powerful enough, and can be easily operated even with a length of 5.3 meters. At the same time it is clear that this is a very simple and sturdy hard worker, which can gladly carry a ton on its back, go through the woods or pull a trailer weighing over 3500 kg. This makes it an indispensable assistant when performing difficult tasks.
