Iveco trucks and buses are an Italian response to the omnipresent American and Asian offerings. For relatively short period of existence, the company has succeeded to open operations in all continents and distribute its solutions across 160 countries. The progress is vindicated by growing sales and, as a result, by a growing turnover numbered in billions of euro. Of course, such stunning performance would be impossible without permanent advancement and ingenuity.
Iveco (Industrial Vehicles Corporation) was established in 1975 as a consequence of a merger of five separate companies: Unic from France, Magirus-Deutz from Germany, OM, Lancia Veicoli Speciali and Fiat Veicoli Industriali from Italy. A new formation set up house in Turin, Italy (and is still residing there), from where it ran all domestic and abroad facilities. Nowadays the brand is totally owned by CNH Industrial Group.
The manufacturer boasts a considerable operational force, located in China, Russia, Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Africa, and Europe, which produce about 150.000 commercial vehicles per year. Alongside commercial units, Iveco specializes in the design of cargo trucks, construction cars, city and intercity passenger buses as well as single-purpose vehicles (i.e. military cars, firefighting implements).

It was in 1978 that the first light truck branded Iveco, called Daily, rolled off the production line. In as little as two years the company has settled down to the development of turbo diesel drives for heavy-industry cars. It established a pair of new divisions, specializing in diesel engines for buses and in firefighting cars.
In addition, during that period the management team was focusing all attention on promotion; thus, the brand has become an official sponsor of the 1980 Olympic Games, the 1982 Davis Cup, the Raid Pigafetta, and the expeditions to the Amazon basin run by Jacques Cousteau.
Afteryears, an already famed Italian maker introduced TurboStar (a heavy vehicle) that has become a best-seller not only in the home market but also across Europe. In 1986 the team acquired a 52% share in Iveco Ford Truck LTD, a joint venture with a local Ford truck subsidiary. Virtually at the same time Iveco entered into a merger with Astra and a Spanish industrial company ENASA.
The 1990 was a year of renovation for the team, as new EuroStar, EuroTrakker, EuroCargo, and EuroTech cars were unveiled. The latter two elaborations received ‘Truck of the Year’ award in two consecutive years (1992-1993). In 1992 Iveco founded an Australian-based subsidiary – Ital – that was further on renamed into Iveco Trucks Australia Limited. Later on, the brand started cooperation with Sinopec Group, Yuejin Motorc Corporation, and established a German-based Iveco Magirus Brandschutztechnik GmbH division in order to set about firefighting activities.
In the late 1990s the company showcased Cursor 8 and Cursor 10 diesel engines, which were differentiated by the implementation of innovative features, including a variable geometry turbine. In early 2000s Iveco acquired Irisbus and set up Iveco Motors division that was consequently incorporated into Fiat Powertrain technologies group. In 2012 Iveco placed itself on record with #1 position in Dakar Rally with Petronas De Rooy team behind the Iveco PowerStar vehicle.
Nowadays Iveco is coping fine with the development of a series of segments, including:
- trucks: light (New Daily with electric propulsion and 0 exhaust emissions system), medium (EuroCargo) and heavy (Stralis, Trakker) vehicles;
- buses (Irisbus brand): minibuses, tour buses, city & intercity buses;
- off-road cars (Astra brand): construction and mining vehicles, tractors, military armored units;
- firefighting vehicles (Magirus brand) and aerial ladders;
- defense cars;
- financial services.
