Iveco Daily

Due to the high cost of diesel the cars on gas are of particular relevance now. The entire line of Iveco Daily vehicles got a prestigious title International Van of the Year 2015. In Iveco Daily Review we are going to describe the van version S35S - gross weight of 3.5 tons, but there are also other vans on the “blue fuel” from the production plant - full weight from 4.0 to 7.0 t versions which have similar chassis and glazed vans.

Powertrain

Bio fuel engine car in design as a whole is similar to the standard diesel version, on the basis of which it is created. The fuel costs have decreased significantly by about 20%. It is important that a gas power plant does not lose in power and resources as compared to the rebuilt cars. The construction of a gas engine with electric ignition and a three-stage catalyst provides very low emissions and meets the EEV environmental standard.

It should be noted that the peculiarity of such a motor is operation on gas mode. And only when the supply of methane comes to an end, the engine automatically switches to petrol and the driver does not need to switch anything manually. Gasoline is only a backup fuel. Its fuel tank has a capacity of 14 liters, which allows you to travel up to 100 km. Bio fuel vehicles, however, are more expensive than pure diesel counterparts by 10%. However, in the intensive use they may even pay for themselves in six months.

The car is offered with manual 6-speed gearbox. In the city traffic the most suitable is 5th gear, where the speed of 80 km / h is reached at 2000 rev / min. And on 6th gear at 1700 rev / min the speed is 90 km / h.

Exterior

The bio fuel Daily hardly looks different from its diesel counterpart. Its specificity is shown only through nameplates with Natural Power inscription that can be translated as “running on natural gas”. And on the bottom one can see the little metal housings of gas cylinders. These conventional containers are mounted on the vehicle frame behind the driver's cab: to the left and right, and as an option – in the middle. In this version of the car there are 5 pieces of 40 liters each.

In general, it is a big advantage that the car on gas has similar repair parts as on diesel vehicle. These, in particular, are speed and pressure sensors, air filter unit with fuses, heating system, etc.

Interior

The cabin has modern design; the plastic is nice and pleasant to the touch. The steering wheel is adjustable in two planes. Driver's seat, in standard equipment, has already cushion adjustments; as an option the driver can choose a set with sprung seat and armrest.

The attention is also drawn to the abundance of containers for items. Besides roomy glove compartment there are three units at the top of the dashboard, capacious pockets in the doors and a large luggage compartment under the double passenger seat cushion. In the spacious cargo compartment with useful volume of 12 cubic meters the floor has a special easy to clean coating. To get access to the inside there is a single side sliding door on right and rare double-wing door. The latter has a flap which may be opened at an angle of 90, 180 or 240 degrees. The spare wheel is located inside the body at the back door to the left.

Drive

The first thing you notice while driving is a low noise level: compared to pure diesel version it is reduced by 5 dB. It is very important for the car in residential areas and at night. Bio fuel engine is only available in version 136 hp, but its power is enough for decent drive. The engine proves to be a very flexible and it is not surprising, because it keeps the maximum torque (350 Nm) in a very wide rev range, from 1500 to 2730 per minute. In general, good traction is shown starting from 1200 rev / min.

Informative and comfortable steering wheel of a relatively small diameter leaves pleasant impressions. The vehicle is very maneuverable, which is a merit of front suspension on the transverse springs - it provides a large turn of the front wheels. The handbrake lever is located in a rather wide groove between the passenger seat and a bench, which is easy to use. The pedals are soft and comfortable.

The on-board computer shows main indicators among which is an average consumption of 11.7 kg of natural gas per 100 kilometers. This corresponds to 11 cubic meters of gas consumed. Given that the cylinders with a total capacity of 200 liters can accommodate up to 40 cubic meters, the gas reserves can last for about 350 km. Although the volume of gas cylinders can be increased, this will help to extend the power reserve.
