Mazda is a Japanese automobile company that produces cars, trucks, buses, and microbuses. It’s headquartered in Hiroshima, Japan.


The history of the Mazda marque dates back to 1920 when Jujiro Matsuda, a fisherman’s son, acquired a construction company that had gone bankrupt. He called a new firm the Toyo Cork Kogyo Co., Ltd. It produced corkwood building materials and products. This business let lay financial foundation for future undertakings.

Soon, the Toyo Cork Kogyo withdrew from building materials production and constructed its first motor cycle. At that time, most people couldn’t afford cars, so they eagerly bought two-wheel transport. In view of such a radical change, the word ‘cork’ was removed from the company’s name.

Start of Vehicles Production

Under the Toyo Kogyo Co., Ltd. marque, production of compact three-wheel trucks, designed for goods delivery, was launched in the 30s. Afterwards, the company worked out several passenger cars concepts but none of them was launched.

It was so until 1960 when average Japanese became more or less able to buy something expensive. Then, the first passenger car that marked a starting point of Mazda history was produced. It was the R-360, a two-door small-capacity city car, which didn’t have any outstanding technical or styling features but was rather comfortable and affordable.

Soon after Mazda’s first auto premiered, the company’s model range was supplemented with the Carol, which was produced in two versions: the Carol-360 two-door sedan and the Carol-600 four-door one. Although their design was almost identical with the Ford Anglia, it didn’t surprise anybody – early Japanese models often counterfeited European and American ones.

From The 60s till the 80s

A New Owner and Wider Model Range

Mazda’s volume of production was constantly increasing and the company stock in stock markets became more and more valuable. Huge potential of Mazda couldn’t go unnoticed. The American automotive company Ford took an interest in it and bought 33% of its shares by 1996 that caused its full acquisition somewhat later.

By the mid ‘80s, the Mazda marque became more famous than its parent company, the Toyo Kogyo Co., Ltd. That’s why it was decided to rename the latter. Thus, it became the Mazda Motor Corporation.

At the Chicago Auto Show 1989, the MX-5 Miata roadster was unveiled. This two-seat car with a convertible top made its debut in the US for a reason – the American market was to be its main one. Due to its beautiful design and reasonable price, it gained popularity at once.

To correspond with a growing tendency, the company started to take on a SUV market with such models as the Demio, the MPV, and the Premacy. There weren’t SUVs produced under the Mazda marque before. The Tribute, an AWD SUV on the basis of the Ford Escape, was also launched.

In the 2000s, Mazda produced a range of successful models, which were modernized later. Undoubtedly, high-demand models are the Mazda 3 and the Mazda 6.

It’s held that the company’s name comes from Ahura Mazda, a god of intelligence, wisdom, and harmony in Zoroastrianism (it’s also known as Mazdaism), an ancient religion of the West Asian civilizations. However, another sources state that the name of the marque derives from the name of its founder, Jujiro Matsuda.


Mazda’s logo depicts a stylized letter ‘M’ that resembles a bird’s stretched wings. The company’s strategy and philosophy is implied here: it’s more than modern; it’s innovative, futuristic, and goal-oriented.

Other sources affirm that the wings stand for the letter ‘V’ that’s associated with the word ‘victory’. There’s also a belief that Mazda’s logo represents a tulip.
