Hatchbacks are no longer labeled as cars with limited facilities and run-of-the-mill performance. Quite the contrary, these vehicles have recently transformed into full-blown solutions with efficiency and convenience levels similar to sedans or SUVs. Indeed, Mazda 2 review proves that size is no longer a marker of ranking.
Key Exterior Features
New 2016 Mazda 2 is engineered according to Skyactiv 2/G/D design template. Thus, it boasts a lightweight ergonomic Kodo construction with a more aggressive look. As distinct from the models of the previous generation, the greenhorn features an updated trapezoidal radiator grille, a swooping rooftop, front electric windows, remote central locking, a different rear bumper as well as new headlights and taillights (LED).
The other major differentiation of the car is increased wheelbase – 101.2 inches. An overall body length has been increased by 6.3 inches – up to 159.8 inches, while an overall height has added some 1.0 inch. Besides, the model will be available as with standard 15-inch wheels, so with optional 16-inch ones.
Interior & Infotainment
Unlike aggressive exterior, the cabin is quite placid inside. It has been given a touch of minimalism with only a few knobs on the dashboard. The trim has been totally redesigned. Instead of entry-level cloth, the seats are now coated in three-tone leather (a combination of black, red and cream colors). The front seats come equipped with back support and other adjustments including height variation (now the seats can handle occupants of up to 6 feet height).
A conspicuous 7-inch connect display is probably the basic peculiarity of the saloon. The whole infotainment system might be controlled either via the touchscreen or the buttons on the dashboard. The latter is located a bit lower and looks more luxurious than previous generations. The system entails such innovative and yet useful utilities like voice command, Bluetooth connectivity, online radio, satellite navigation, etc.
It should be noted that the design of gauge-cluster section of the dashboard is largely dependent upon the trim level. The higher trims come with a digital speedometer, integrated within a centralized tachometer; the lower levels accommodate separated central speedometer and digital tachometer.
Moreover, it’s impossible to omit in Mazda 2 review the implementation all advanced safety options. Hence, the vehicle offers the driver such facilities as automatic high-beam, curtain airbags, hill hold assist, cruise control, traction control, lane departure assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic assist, emergency braking, and head-up screen.
Powertrain & Performance
The next-gen Mazda 2 2016 will be offered with one out of three available SkyActiv engines: a pair of petrol items (1.3/1.5 l) and one diesel solution (1.5 l SkyActiv-D). The 1.5-liter diesel engine produces 103 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. The 1.3-liter gasoline motor provides not more than 91 horsepower and 89 lb-ft of torque at 4000-6000 rpm.
Besides, the customers will be given a choice between a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. The drive is furnished with Start/Stop option & brake energy regeneration system (i-eLoop).
The model is supposed to reach the utmost speed around 112 mph. Versions with a manual gearbox are thought to accelerate up to 60 mph for some 9.9 seconds, while trims with an automatic gearbox – for 10.7 seconds. An estimated fuel consumption index equals to 83.1 mpg.
