The Peugeot RCZ is a sport compact 2-door coupe produced by the French automaker between 2009 and 2015. The Peugeot RCZ is a holder of an innumerable quantity of prizes. In 2010, Top Gear awarded it the ‘Coupe of the Year’ title while Diesel Car bestowed it a title of the ‘Best Sports Car’ five times in a row.
The history of the coupe, which was unveiled at the 2009 International Motor Show Germany in Frankfurt, started two years earlier, in 2007, with the 308 RCZ concept car. The automaker didn’t intend to develop it further but appreciation on the part of car experts and general public persuaded them to launch its production. Boris Reinmöller designed the Peugeot RCZ. The coupe that went into production inherited most of the concept car’s features, especially in styling. However, some changes were inevitable (the exhaust system was renewed for example).
18 September 2015, the last RCZ unit was constructed at the Magna Steyr plant in Graz, Austria.
The Peugeot RCZ is 168.9 in long, 72.6 in wide (without mirrors), and 53.5 in high with the 102.8-in wheelbase. With its low and long profile, gibbous wheel arches, and quaint window lines, it’s definitely the car that turns heads. 19-in alloy wheels, varnished black grille, and mat black roof arches add to its attractiveness, making it look rather impressive and even dramatic. However, its zest is the double-bubble roof (when it’s raining, it’s entrancing to watch raindrops sliding down the rear windshield).
The 2015 Peugeot RCZ looks very sporty inside. The steering wheel of a special form together with a gear lever and low driving position give an impression that you’re driving a racing car. The sport seats can be trimmed to your liking (and purse): with fabric, genuine leather, or half leather.
As for comfort inside the RCZ, it’s where some problems emerge. If you’re a driver or front-seat passenger, you’ll hardly notice any. However, if you’re sitting at the back, where another two seats are put, you must feel cramped – there’s too little leg- and headroom here.
The 2015 Peugeot RCZ’s boot astonishes! It’s really incredibly huge as for a sport coupe – 384 litres (almost as a family hatchback’s). Note that the rear seats are foldable. When they’re folded down, it boosts up to 760 litres.
There are several storage compartments across the cabin. Among them, the door pockets are the most practical. The area under the armrest is minuscule, the glovebox is rather a fuse block, and the cup holder is too shallow to fit a usual coffee cup.
The 2015 Peugeot RCZ, based on the PSA PF2 platform, comes with one of four engines: three 1.6-L petrol ones (with different power rates) and one 2.0-L diesel motor.
One of 1.6-L inline 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engines produces 154 hp at 6,000 rpm and 177 lb/ft of torque at 1,400 rpm being mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox. It lets it accelerate to 62 mph in 8.4 seconds while its top speed is 132 mph. This engine’s CO2 emissions rate is 168 g/km.
Another petrol engine the Peugeot RCZ can have under the bonnet is more powerful generating 197 hp at 5,800 rpm and 203 lb/ft of torque at 1,770 rpm. Paired with a 6-speed manual transmission, it speeds the car up to 62 mph in 7.5 seconds. Top speed is 146 mph. This engine is also more fuel-efficient: it produces 155 g/km of CO2.
There’s one more petrol engine – the one that makes 266 hp at 6,000 rpm and 243 lb/ft of torque at 1,900 rpm (it’s also paired with a 6-speed manual transmission). Reaching 62 mph in astounding 5.9 seconds, its top speed is 155 mph. CO2 emissions rate is even lower – 149 g/km.
A 2.0-L HDi diesel motor, which is also available for the Peugeot RCZ, is known for producing 161 hp at 4,000 rpm and 251 lb/ft of torque at 2,000 rpm being coupled wih a 6-speed manual gearbox. The RCZ equipped with it reaches 62 mph in 8.2 seconds. Top speed is 140 mph.
As for mileage, the Peugeot RCZ is rather fuel-efficient car, regardless of an engine it’s fitted with. Petrol motors cover 40-42 mpg on average while a diesel one is even more fuel-saving running 54.5 mpg.
The Peugeot RCZ runs on 19-in alloy wheels and has electric mirrors and windows as well as keyless entry, automatic headlamps and wipers, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, and an active rear spoiler. In the cabin, there are leather dashboard, cooled glovebox, power-adjustable sport seats with memory; USB/iPod/Bluetooth connectivity and CD/MP3 playback function are supported. Moreover, an owner of the RCZ is provided with automatic dual-zone air conditioning, cruise control with speed limiter, parking sensors front and back, etc. Satellite navigation is available in the range-topper.
The 2015 Peugeot RCZ hasn’t been brought to the Euro NCAP crash test yet. However, this fact shouldn’t make you doubt its reliability and safety – the car is equipped with state-of-the-art safety controls. Among them are ABS, electronic stability program, intelligent traction control, tire pressure monitoring system, hill-start assist, and emergency braking assist. Front and side airbags come as standard but there aren’t curtain ones in the car.
