Clio was one of the most popular Renault models in recent years: about 12 millions of these cars have been produced since 1990. At the Paris Motor Show debuted fourth generation of Clio. And this is not a budget model (currently this niche in the Renault lineup is occupied by Logan and Sandero), it is positioned as a more expensive and more richly equipped car, so let’s find out why from Renault Clio Review.
From now on the model is offered in only five-door hatchback and station wagon, and there is no more of three-door version. Moreover, even Clio Renault Sport became a five-door; however, this does not prevent the car from having very dynamic look. Its windshield has a large angle of inclination, and the rear door handles are hidden in the roof racks. The sides are decorated with stylish chrome moldings and window line has an elegant bend. The front part is made in the style of concept DeZir and Captur. In the center of the narrow grille there is a large Renault logo. There is also an option to personalize a hatchback with available stickers on the body, two-tone paint, rear diffuser, and aluminum 17-inch wheels.
Compared with its predecessor, the new Clio is slightly larger in size: length grew by 76 mm to 4062 mm and wheelbase – by 15 mm (to 2590 mm). Hatchback became wider (1731 mm), but the height was reduced by 50 mm - up to 1448 mm. With use of lightweight steel, the vehicle weight was reduced by about 100 kg up to 980 kg in the basic version.
Inside, it is immediately noticeable that the quality of finishing materials is higher. The plastic surfaces are liberally diluted with numerous chrome accents, and in the most expensive versions the center console is covered in black lacquered plastic. In addition, the front panel can be painted into body color, and three-spoke steering wheel and air vents are available in multi-colored trim.
In the flagship version the central panel is topped with 7-inch touch screen of multimedia system, which is a rarity for cars of B-class. Incidentally, it includes applications for mobile phones and voice control. The steering column in all Clio is height and tilt adjustable. The front seats are 45 mm lower than in the previous generation model. Of course, this adds sporty nature to interior, but visibility suffers due to thick back roof pillars. Therefore, the rear-view camera is a very useful item in the list of options. The rear seats are also placed lower, so headroom increased despite the reduced overall height of the hatchback. Trunk volume increased to 300 liters in the normal state and 1146 l - with rear seats folded. Station wagon Clio Estate has even bigger trunk - 443 l.
Clio equipment significantly expanded, in the basic configuration Expression it is presented with keyless access system, air conditioning, electric windows, the CD-player, connection Bluetooth, and cruise control with speed limiter. Mandatory are: six airbags and ESC stabilization system with hill-start assist. The most expensive version Dynamique S MediaNav has climate control, parking sensors, light and rain sensors, and navigation system.
As before, the initial version is equipped with a 1.2-liter 75-horsepower gasoline engine. New to the lineup is the 0.9-liter three-cylinder turbo engine capacity of 90 hp. It is well manifested in the middle engine speed range, as peak torque of 135 Nm is available at 2500 rev / min.
However, at 3500 rev / min the thrust becomes much smaller. Acceleration to 100 km / h takes 12.2 seconds, and top speed is 182 km / h. Through technology of killing the engine with stops the fuel consumption is small - 5.6 l / 100 km in the urban cycle and 3.9 l / 100 km - in a country. Also there is 1.2-liter 120-hp turbo engine and Clio Renault Sport received a 1.6-liter 200-strong “four”.
Both available turbodiesels are 1.5-liter, with a capacity of 75 and 90 hp. They work surprisingly quiet and smooth. In the most powerful version the maximum 220 Nm of torque is available from 1750 rev / min. Therefore, the engine is elastic and dynamics is better than in 0.9-liter version - 11.7 to 100 km / h. In the city Clio consumes 4.0 l / 100 km, while on the road - 3.2 l / 100 km.
All modifications are equipped with 5-speed manual gearbox, which works quite accurately, as the clutch pedal is light. There is also an option with 6-speed transmission and two clutches.
The car is easy to drive, its steering is now more acute - making 2.7 turns from lock to lock. Extended track and low center of gravity contribute to a better behavior in cornering. The petrol versions are more maneuverable, because diesel “nose” is significantly heavier.
