Skoda Roomster

In recent years the demand for compact vans increased in many countries. And it is not surprising: on the one hand, they are no bigger than hatchbacks of B-class, and on the other – they have spacious cabins and transformable roomy trunks. However price factor plays an important role and people prefer more affordable models among which there are Fiat Fiorino Qubo, Kia Venga and Skoda Roomster. In Skoda Roomster Review we are going to compare the latest with its competitors.


Skoda Roomster looks very unusual - it seems to be created from two different cars. From the “nose” and up to the front door it is very similar to the Fabia, which, in fact, has the same platform. Therefore, there can be seen the familiar Skoda wide false radiator grille and large almond-shaped headlamps. However, the design of the back part is radically different that is even designated by a characteristic window line break. The window is slightly larger, and the door handles are hidden in the window frame. Thick rear roof pillars are decorated with narrow lights. Roomster is a little bigger than its rivals – it reaches 4205 mm in length with a wheelbase of 2617 mm. Venga is more compact - 4068 and 2615 mm, respectively. Qubo length is 3959 mm and wheelbase - 2513 mm. Interesting, but Skoda herewith is lighter than its competitors: it weighs 1155 kg, while the Fiat - 1240 kg, and Kia - 1270 kg.


The cabin of Roomster is solid and many details are known from Fabia: the steering wheel, and the front panel. Plastic finishing in diluted with chrome inserts, in particular, the devices have silver rims. The scales are made in a classic style. Unlike the other two minivans, Skoda is equipped with on-board computer. The switches on the front panel are arranged rationally and clearly separated from each other. Roomster is equipped with two glove boxes, one of which is cooled, and under the front passenger seat there is a drawer. The front seats are moderately elastic, and their backs provide good lateral support. The steering column is adjusted by height and depth.

Of course, by definition, a minivan should be spacious inside. The Roomster and Qubo can easily fit people of 185 cm tall. Kia and Skoda are equipped with horizontal seat adjustment - so the angle of their backrests is regulated. In the five-seat configuration, the most capacious luggage compartment is “Czech” - 450 liters against 440 liters at the “Korean” and 330 liters in “Italian”. With folded rear seats the figures grow to 1780, 1253 and 2500 liters respectively.

All three cars are equipped with 1.4-liter petrol four-cylinder engines and manual gearbox. The engine of Roomster develops 85 hp at 5000 rev / min. It offers good traction in the middle engine speed range, because the maximum 126 Nm of torque is available at 3300 rev / min. The motor usually works very quietly and smoothly; however, at the fifth gear the speed of 130 km / h is achieved at high 4000 rev / min. Therefore, the motor becomes noisy on a highway. Acceleration to 100 km / h takes 13 seconds, and top speed is 171 km / h. In the city the fuel consumption is 8.9 l / 100km, and on the road - 5.6 l / 100 km. Roomster also can be equipped with engine capacity of 1.2 liters (64hp) and 1.6 liters (105hp).

Performance and Drive

Skoda is a kind of a compromise option. Its handling can’t be called as interesting as Venga, and as confident as Fiorino Qubo. Drive in the Roomster is moderately elastic, and only really deep potholes can create discomfort; however, the suspension is too noisy. The car is low, so unwanted movement of the body in turns is limited. The steering is perfectly tuned – so it is accurate and informative. Also it is worth mentioning that the directional stability is good at high speeds. The brakes provide confident slowdown.
