Toyota Avalon

The first Toyota Avalon appeared in 1994 as the model one class higher than the Camry. In many countries, it is considered the flagship of the Japanese brand. According to Toyota statistics the sedan attracts the most attention of older people: the average age of its customers - 64 year. There is nothing wrong of course, but now the representatives of the Japanese company decide to attract attention of younger customers. For this they slightly changed the image and character of fourth generation Avalon, which is described in Toyota Avalon Review.

Exterior

Like its predecessor, the new Avalon uses an elongated front-wheel drive platform of Toyota Camry. The wheelbase remains the same (2820 mm), but the body overhangs are shortened, so the length of the car is reduced by 60 mm - up to 4960 mm. Furthermore, the sedan became slightly narrower (1835 mm) and lower - 1460 mm. By using lighter steel grades, the car lost about 55 kg - up to 1567 kg in the basic version. A drag coefficient is lowered to 0.28.

The design of a new car has become more interesting and attractive. Smooth lines dominate in the appearance and the silhouette of an arched roof looks elegant. The narrow V-shaped grille is decorated with chrome and combined with slanted headlights. The front bumper has a huge “mouth” of air intake. Window frames, door handles and narrow strip between the taillights are decorated with chrome. Standard equipment includes 17-inch alloy wheels, but 18-inch wheels are also available for surcharge.

Avalon seats are trimmed with leather, and in more expensive versions leather can be even found on the front panel. Three-spoke steering wheel is much smaller than in its predecessor. The dials of the instruments with a soft blue optitron backlight are placed in separate “troughs”.

The central panel is significantly reduced in size and it has two color displays: the top 6.1-inch touch screen of Entune multimedia system and a small screen displaying digital clock and audio data.

The front soft and comfortable seats are located 10 mm lower than before. The second row of seats has increased overhead space by about 10 mm, but the legroom is reduced by 43 mm due to the fact that the seat cushion is moved forward, thus increasing the trunk capacity to 453 liters.

Technical Equipment

The base version has very rich equipment and it includes power accessories, dual-zone climate control, radio with CD-player, sunroof, light sensor, the connection Bluetooth, stabilization and tire pressure monitoring, and 10 airbags. The most expensive version the Limited has a CD-changer, rain sensor, heated front seats, a rearview camera, power trunk lid, navigation system, xenon headlights, and a tracking system for the “blind” zones. In the list of options there are ventilated front and heated rear seats, three-zone climate control, and adaptive cruise control with automatic emergency braking system.

Powertrain

The petrol 3.5-liter V6 with direct fuel injection remained unchanged from the third-generation Avalon. It develops 268 hp at 6200 rev / min. The maximum 336 Nm of torque is available at high 4700 rev / min. The engine pleases with quite operation and no vibrations. 6-speed automatic transmission also works smoothly. The acceleration to 100 km / h takes 6.7 seconds, and the top speed is 240 km / h. The fuel consumption is reduced to 11.2 liters / 100 km in the urban cycle and 7.6 l / 100 km in a country. This result was achieved thanks to special economic regime, making the accelerator pedal less sensitive.

Avalon Hybrid system consists of a 2.5-liter gasoline engine and electric motor, the total capacity of which is 200 hp. This sedan is more economical: in the city it consumes 5.9 l / 100 km, while on the road - 6.0 l / 100 km. In addition, the car can travel 2-3 km on electric power. Instead of “automatic” transmission there is a stepless CVT.
