Toyota Highlander is a midsize crossover which has already reached its third generation. In this Toyota Highlander Review we are going to talk precisely about the third Highlander which became a very interesting model for fans of such types of cars. What is so interesting about it? Let’s find out.
In terms of spaciousness Highlander is almost as impressively large as jeeps. There is a third row of seats, and it is very comfortable. The off-road performance, perhaps is not as high, but quite optimal for a car that is ideal for large families and drives not only in urban areas.
The car is available in two trim levels: Elegance and Prestige. Both versions offer the presence of leather upholstery, leather steering wheel, luggage blinds, tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel; there is a rain sensor, cruise control, auto-dimming rearview mirror, comfort keyless access, start with a button, full power accessories, folding mirrors, power liftgate. There are heated mirrors, windshield, front and rear seats, and a steering wheel. Climate control is three-zone. The audio system includes a CD / MP3-player with control buttons on the steering wheel, six speakers and rich possibilities of switching, color display, a rearview camera. The version Elegance is different with silver decorative inserts in the cabin, the presence of rear parking sensors and electric driver's seat. The top-end version offers navigation system, front and rear parking sensors, ventilation and electric front seats with memory settings for the driver's seat, good interior lighting, sun blinds, and wooden inserts.
In front-wheel drive version of the Highlander there is the base powerplant – in-line 4-cylinder 1AR-FE engine capacity of 2.7 liters (188 hp). All-wheel drive crossover is designed with V6 engine - a series of engine 2GR-FE 3.5-liter and a power of 249 hp. Both engines use a chain drive with dual electronic variable valve timing Dual VVT-i, which provides a combination of high traction performance and fuel economy. Front suspension of Highlander preserves original type - independent on the strut. Rear suspension is now multilink.
Modifications of construction resulted in favorable changes in the interior and, above all, it made it possible to increase the capacity of the luggage compartment. Its volume by default (with a third row of seats) - 269 liters, and with folded additional seats - 813 liters. Minimum turning radius - 5,9 m. Steering (Electric Power) is quite informative and relatively short suspension movement minimizes body tilt when cornering. On the front axle there are mounted two-piston brakes with ventilated discs, at the rear axle is a single-piston disk mechanism.
If we talk about security, here the manufacturer traditionally equipped Highlander with everything modern and necessary. In the base version the car has received a number of electronic assistants, designed to significantly improve the manageability: stability, traction control, hill-start assist. Everyday customary braking system assistants can be considered: ABS, EBD and BAS. In the configuration Prestige there is an assistant of lanes change and downhill assist control. The complex of passive safety comprises pretensioners, active head restraints; front and side airbags, curtain airbags.
The new generation Highlander is offered not only in all-wheel drive modifications, but also in front-wheel drive – which was lacking in the official lineup of the previous generation. This version is designed for those who prefer more comfort and spaciousness, and off-road performance is not fundamental; plus there is a good opportunity to save on good price and service. In general, the new Highlander has become even richer in the equipment, and even a list of the basic configuration of equipment looks very solid. All this allows the Highlander to be one of the most popular and sought after big crossovers.
