FCA Will Be Punished

The chief U.S. government official concluded that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles would be punished for failing to appropriately repair the vehicles recalled. Such a decision was made after an all-day public hearing conducted by federal regulators upon the case.

It should be reminded that FCA didn’t repair properly or timely defects found in its vehicles after they had been recalled, states the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. There are 23 safety defect recalls (about 11 million vehicles) including such models as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Ram trucks, Jeep Liberty, Chrysler 200, and Chrysler 300.

Due to FCA’s inability to fulfil its responsibilities to the public, the automaker can be imposed huge fines. Mark Rosekind, NHTSA administrator, supposes a penalty size will be defined by the end of the month.

Rosekind emphasized that the worst thing about the issue is a repeating failure of FCA to correct the mistakes; it’s become a tendency. Faults were found in fuel systems, ignition switches, air bags, rear wheels, tie rod ends, etc.

Moreover, some people were killed and severely injured because of break-downs in cars not repaired in time. Dozens of people could have been saved; tragedies could have been prevented… This is the main reason why the hearing has been conducted.

Clarence Ditlow, executive director of the Centre for Auto Safety, insists that the NHTSA must intensify a penalty for vehicles with manufacturing defects that fail to be repaired in time. Each automaker is to know that the alternative to leaving a vehicle without a proper repair is buying a new one.

Scott Kunselman, senior vice president for vehicle safety at FCA, who spoke for the automaker at the hearing, ensured that Fiat Chrysler had taken into consideration the rebukes received from the NHTSA and tries to fix the recalled cars as soon as possible.
