The Honda Civic Tourer Is the Best Gas Mileage Auto in the World

Honda set a new world record as the most fuel-efficient car, reports the automaker’s press office. A production estate car Honda Civic Tourer powered by a 1.6-litre diesel engine covered the distance of 13,498 km consuming 2.8 litres of fuel per 100 km on average.

A record-breaking lap started in Aalst, Belgium, on June 1 and finished here on June 25, 2015. During this period, the auto passed through 24 countries of the European Union. Fergal McGrath and Julian Warren, members of Honda’s European Research and Development Team, did the same distance as from the UK to Australia. Each of them had to drive about 600 km or 7.5 hours daily.

The record to be officially fixed, the drivers provided a Guinness World Record commission with data on a fuel consumption rate in each country, refuelling and stopping as well as with GPS readings, photographs, videos, and witnesses’ signatures.

McGrath and Warren planned their route carefully, prepared for road conditions beforehand, and tried to drive smoothly avoiding hard braking or accelerating. Such behaviour let the car drive 1,500 km on a single tank. Its maintenance cost the drivers just 645 euros.

Earlier, the Peugeot 208 set the similar record, as the most fuel-efficient car. However, it wasn’t registered officially.
